Tuesday's OOTW - Netflix, Nachos, & Naps

I love watching Netflix after the wee one goes to bed. Currently I’m watching Drop Dead Diva and I’m enjoying it way more than I thought I would. It’s actually pretty engaging. I also love nachos – loaded ones with lots of jalapeño. And naps? I can’t seem to fall asleep in the middle of the day, but I love to lie down for a few minutes and just rest. I decided to buy a shirt that expresses my love for these three things. So here it is styled with a leopard print jacket, some gold jeans, and velvet shoes. I feel like such a rebel. A rebel who goes to bed at 11pm each night. 😉

Tuesday's OOTW - Can't Make The Scene...

I love green and given the opportunity I’d probably wear some form of it every day. I agree with the quote from the movie The Mask – “You can’t make the scene if you ain’t got the green.” Yeah I know he was referring to money, but Pantone agrees with me because every season green seems to be sneaking into the most popular colours. This spring it’s the colours Greenery and Kale. But for me, I love a good emerald green. I must admit when I first saw this coat in a magazine I let our a “Squeee!” of happiness. I hauled butt to my nearest Old Navy store and bought it immediately. That was a few years ago, but I still get lots of compliments while wearing it. It’s also a wool blend so it keeps me nice and toasty warm. Do you have a favourite coat? Let me know in the comments below.

Friday's Faux Paw

Pirate 2Winter is still with us on the Canadian prairies. There hasn’t been much sun as of late and it’s been rather chilly. These days you will most likely find me in front of the furnace vent in the kitchen or snuggling in the blankets on Joelle’s bed.

Unfortunately there is a common faux paw I have noticed this winter (when not snoozing) – women trying to stuff baggy jeans into boots. Seriously? There are something called skinny jeans people! They have been around for quite some time and there are some for around $20 at WAL-MART and Old Navy just to name two stores. If you insist on ignoring me on this one, you should switch your Facebook language to pirate and I give you this rating:

The cutest hat ever from ilex.every.day!

This is a sponsored post.

We Canadians are a tough bunch. Where I live it’s winter and quite cold for eight months of the year. I never want to sacrifice style when it comes to staying warm. Staying warm or great hair? Great hair or staying warm? Why can’t we have both? The great news is that yes, now we can! This adorable hat (we call them toques here in Canada) from ilex.every.day allows you to rock your top knot or pony and stay snug as a bug at the same time. When I saw this cute toque on Holly’s Instagram feed at @ilex.every.day I wanted one so bad! Luckily she gave me one to keep and talk about today so I am super happy. And warm. And stylish.

For those unfamiliar with ilex.every.day, the owner Holly loves making beautiful knit and crocheted things for people to wear. Everything in her shop is handmade and designed by her, unless specifically noted. She also gives credit to pattern designers whose work she’s borrowed, so if you’re a crocheter yourself and you find something beautiful, you’ll be able to replicate it using their pattern. All of her materials are high-quality and traded fairly. Many are manufactured in the USA or Canada, and those sourced from exotic locations are strictly Fair Trade. With every purchase, you are supporting local, sustainable production practices. Also when you purchase an Ilex product, you’ll receive a complimentary “Story of Me” card, detailing where the materials in your product originated. See something you like, but want it customized? Simply send her a message, and she will work with you to make your vision a reality.

Want one for yourself and for 30% off? Then head on over to ilex.every.day’s new ilex.everyday VIP Facebook Group where she will be giving out 30% off coupons for this awesome toque. Also for those here in Edmonton and want to see the toques in person, head on over to Made Local and grab one of your own. With this being such an awesome idea, I’m sure they’ll sell out fast.

If you don’t live in Edmonton, then head on over to her Etsy shop here. And don’t forget to follow her on her regular Facebook page and Twitter.

Now here’s me rocking my new toque! Thanks Holly!

Tuesday's OOTW - The Loch Ness Stylester

I have never been to Scotland, but in my mind these photos are what I believe it would look like. Maybe part of the reason it reminds me of Scotland is that I’m wearing a plaid scarf? Who knows!

A long time ago while watching How I Met Your Mother, Robin was wearing a fab tan trench coat with ruffles on the bottom. I hoped someday I would find something similar to it and this coat came into my life. I look washed out in tan so I paired it with red accessories for that added pop of colour. And as for the the hat? Well I just like hats. A lot.

What celebrity styles have you imitated? Let me know in the comments below.

Friday's Faux Paw

farrahI saw a gorgeous woman the other day but was very sad for her. Why you ask? Because even though she had on a beautiful, modern, outfit and wonderful make up, her hair was dry, damaged, and her hairstyle was non-existent. Unfortunately the hair faux paw aged her and brought down her entire look.

Sad to say this is all too common – gorgeous woman with stylish clothes and makeup and outdated frazzled hair. But the good news is that this can be solved with a trip to a knowledgeable hair stylist. It used to mean that after 40 you got your hair cut short, but nowadays this no longer holds true – ie. Julianne Moore, Courtney Cox, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston etc. What this does mean is that if you wear the same hairstyle you’ve had for decades, you will look dated, older than you are, or like you’re trying desperately to hang onto your youth – so get a modern update!

If you do decide to do nothing then this rating is for you:

My Husband Is Frickin' Awesome!

My sweetie during his first new year back in 2015. Yes he will be mad at me when he’s older.

Yep, that’s the title my husband gave me when I asked what to call my blog post. Believe me, he actually is more helpful than this – most of the time. 😉

But seriously, in light of the new year I wanted to take a moment to reflect on things. No this isn’t going to be a touchy-feely post but a post about getting real. In reality people make new year’s resolutions and by March (usually a lot sooner) they break them. I don’t think that’s a very good way to start the new year by feeling that you are a failure. As a matter of fact I gave up making new year’s resolutions a long time ago for this reason. Instead I make a vision board with things I’d like to accomplish in the next twelve months. I’m going to explain how I do it so maybe you can do it too!

First off I write a bunch of goals out. Then I grab some magazines and cut out pictures that represent each goal. Then I take a bristol board and write my goals on it. I glue the magazine clippings around it and voila! That’s pretty much it. I have learned it’s better to write down my goals on piece of paper and glue it on instead of writing them directly on the bristol board because then you can rip it off and put a new one on for next year. As you complete each goal check it off. Most importantly be good to yourself and realize that you most likely will not get everything done in the year. For example last year I accomplished ten out of eighteen of my goals. Do I feel bad? Nope. I am happy I am making progress because zero out of eighteen would be worse.

So what are you waiting for? Get started! Tell me how it’s working for you in the comments below.

Have a great 2017 everyone!

Tuesday's OOTW - Shuffle Off To Buffalo

I know that buffalo plaid is everywhere right now but I couldn’t resist this darling coat from Old Navy. I mean c’mon, it was 60% off! I need to get interesting coats when I find them because it is freaking cold here in Canada. For eight months of the year I don’t want to quit looking stylish just because I have to wear a damn coat. *End Of Rant*

I thought it would be cool to mix some prints while I was at it, so I threw on this cute animal print hat. It looks like a combination of tiger and leopard print – a “tigpard” print, perhaps? The fuzzy mittens and the scarf were just to keep warm but they seem to be working out just fine in the overall scheme of things. Is it cold where you are? Let me know in the comments below.

Friday's Faux Paw

Toni-BRaxton

Today faux paw flies in the face of today’s exhibitionism. I’m talking about wearing revealing clothing. Many women think that sexy equals less clothing but this simply not true. Yes many times “less is more” but not when it comes to your clothes. The way to fix this is to show skin selectively. For example, if you’re wearing a short skirt, cover up your upper body. If your blouse displays a bit of cleavage. then wear a longer skirt. Also try wearing a sheer top, with a nice camisole underneath it, or something that shows your shoulders, back, or even toes. Leaving something to the imagination makes you all the more interesting. Wearing something overtly revealing makes you look cheap and people might think that you’re all body and no mind. So ladies let’s be classy not trashy!

Ilymix - A Great Accessories Company!

This is a sponsored post.

Blanket scarves are still a big deal right now – especially here in Canada where it’s very cold. When Ilymix asked me if I wanted a blanket scarf, I replied, “Yes please!” I chose this white, blue, tan, and wine one because I haven’t seen anyone wearing it and because it will look great with everything from a wine top (shown below) to jeans and a white tee. I love Ilymix because they have such variety on their website and they have free shipping worldwide – no minimum order! And what’s even better is if you use the code clothesbutnotquite20 at checkout you get 20% off your order. Happy shopping!

Tuesday's OOTW - Dot's My Kinda New Year!

Hope everyone is having a great 2017 so far! I rang in the new year in front of the TV while eating and drinking. My bus driving husband had to work until 4 am so not much partying for us. At least I didn’t have to deal with all the drunk people like he had to.

I love polka dots and pretty much every pattern that exists. So I decided to a bit of print mixing for today’s look. What do you think? Would you wear leopard and polka dots together? Let me know in the comments below. Happy New Year!
